Classroom Progress

With school just around the corner, I’ve spent a couple days in my classroom starting to get things decorated and ready. I’m kind of doing a super-hero theme, yet I don’t have a single super-hero image in the classroom! Oh well! I’ve got a few posters I wouldn’t mind printing off sometime soon. Here’s what the space is looking like so far:

Here’s the most super-heroish part of the room. I used foam brushes to paint the skyline on cheap bedsheets. I painted it while it was stapled up to the bulletin board. I’ll hope that it didn’t leak through. Luckily, they are always covered up. I am guessing that this will become a place to put Common Core Vocabulary, but I’m not positive yet. Above the bulletin board is my timeline of world history. I pulled all of the dates and facts out of our history book and put them along the timeline. This was before I looked really well at our standards and realized that we only have to do the history of Europe and the Americas. Oh well, I think it’s good for the students to be able to read over events from history around the world.

This is where assignments will be turned in. I haven’t finished this yet, but it’s much less of a mess than it was last year. The wall was covered in all sorts of unnecessary papers last year.

I’ve done a few other small things, but I’ve got quite a few finishing touches to put up and take care of before I post more pictures. I have 1 1/2 days that I plan to spend in the classroom yet before school starts. I’m sure I’ll be able to finish and get a basic idea of lesson plans for the first week… maybe.

I went to a “barn sale” (aka-yard sale with a lot of “stuff”) hoping to find a bookshelf for my classroom. I have a LOT of books! I didn’t find a regular book shelf, but I did find this. I’m thinking it will make a great stand for me to place my weekly materials after it receives a nice coat of some fun-colored spray paint!

Blog posts may continue to be kind of spread out from now til the start of school. I’ve got two huge curtain orders to get busy on and the 20lbs (not exaggerating) of fabric should be arriving today! :-)

Bridal Shower

Last weekend we celebrated the upcoming wedding of my sister-in-law and threw a bridal shower for her. You may remember the gift I made from here.

We had enjoyed brunch for the shower. My mother-in-law made a few breakfast casseroles and muffins, my sister-in-law brought fruit salad, and I made a lemon bundt cake and white cake with buttercream frosting. My sister-in-law also brought the flowers and put them together. They were beautiful!

I think this might have been the easiest, most impressive cake I’ve made. I am very pleased with how it turned out and how it tasted. It must have passed the test for the guests. There wasn’t anything left. The lemon bundt cake was the BEST. I’ll definitely be making it again. I had a bit of an issue and the entire top of the cake stuck inside the pan. Luckily Mom worked her magic and pieced it back together and I used a LOT of lemon glaze to cover it up. It looked good when it was finished, but it had me really concerned for a while!

Here’s the beautiful bride-to-be, Heather. I love this hanger that her mom got for her. What a perfect shower gift! I’m keeping it in mind for future brides.

This is Heather with her fiance, Michael. He was not too excited about all of the pictures and said he was trying to save all of the picture-taking for the wedding. Sorry Michael, you’re out of luck!

And this is a picture of my sister-in-law, Erin, mother-in-law, Debbie, sister-in-law, Heather, and me. I’m a bit cheesy, but that’s okay! I’m so lucky to have married into a wonderful family. I’m looking forward to the wedding in September!

Common Core

If you’re not a teacher… I suggest skipping this one.

This past week I attended an in-service that our school corporation offered on the Common Core State Standards. It was “Transitioning to the Common Core State Standards” and was presented by Michael Rush, the Executive Director of The Center for College and Career Readiness. This coming week we will be doing a second session focusing more on assessment with Common Core. This first session was just an introduction.

I’m going to start off by saying it was a very overwhelming day. The first half of the day was the most overwhelming as we compared the Common Core to the Indiana State Standards. It also helped me to see how the Common Core Standards work within Language Arts.

Throughout a few presentations and an activity I was able to understand that each standard in Language Arts correlates with the same numbered standard in the grades above and below me. This is going to make it much easier for me to provide remediation for my lower students and challenge my higher students. I will know what standards they should have already learned or what they will be learning in the upcoming years. This is particularly important for me since I am teaching 6th grade, which is their final year of elementary school.

In the afternoon we began diving more into what will be expected. I was very surprised by the vocabulary that is expected at each grade level. This will have to be a major focus in my classroom and is something I’m going to have to work on improving. We currently useĀ  Greek and Latin Roots and Prefix and Suffix books with our students and they will not provide everything these students really will need. There will be three tiers of vocabulary: Tier 1 – everyday words; Tier 2 – academic; and Tier 3 – domain specific. I would definitely like more information on this and would love to know what other teachers are using that have already begun teaching from the Common Core.

We were shown a chart (which I would really like to find – I’ve been searching) that shows what types of reading/writing we should be using each quarter. It suggested 1 extended reading (novel/play), 5-9 short texts (literature and informational texts), 1 research project, and 1-2 narrative writings each quarter. They also suggest that we work toward a balance of 50% informational text and 50% literature. Since I am teaching history this year, I expect this to be easy to achieve. The chart that we saw gave more details on all of this and I will share it as soon as I find it. I will be sure to ask Mr. Rush about this when we have our training this coming week.

What does all of this mean for me? Well, I’m teaching language arts and history this year. I’m planning to relate nearly everything I teach in reading to history (short stories, charts, poems, short videos – listening/speaking standards, and even novels). I also plan to focus the research the students do on history. I plan to introduce the students to as much vocabulary as possible and to tie in the Greek/Latin roots when we come across them in our reading. I think it is going to be a challenging year, but I hope to make the history come alive with the resources I pull into the lessons. I also found out that I will be having several aides and a Title I teacher in my classroom for a portion of my lower group’s class. This will be time for literacy groups and I know I will be able to pull in Reading A-Z and short articles to focus on during this time to enhance the lessons even more and help students improve on skills they are struggling with.

I will be posting again on Common Core Standards after our next session. I also will be attending an Achieve 3000 training right before school starts. I have been very impressed with the program so far and look forward to seeing a few more ways it can be used in the classroom. I think this will be a major component for assessing and providing practice for my students.

BUSY!

So, I apologize for the lack of posting the past week. It’s been crazy, busy around here and won’t be slowing down anytime too soon. I have a ton of post ideas, but I’m not sure when I’ll get them all written up. Here’s a quick rundown of some events of the past week:

  • Mom and Dad came up to visit for the weekend. Mom stayed here Monday and Tuesday and I spent Wednesday and Thursday at their house and playing at Holiday World.
  • My mother-in-law and sister-in law held a bridal shower for my sister-in-law, Heather, last weekend. It was a great success. More details about that soon.
  • I had two curtain orders placed at about the same time. One set is finished and mailed and the other is ironed, pinned, and ready to be sewed. That’s the plan for nap time today.
  • I’ve felt like crud the past three weeks and haven’t run for at least two. I am considering the money I paid for entering the 5K as a donation to the Henry Co. Optimists and I’m not going to run. I’ll give it a try sometime when I’m feeling better.
  • I’m having my friends over for a Favorite Things Party on Sunday. My group of friends turned into two friends, so I’m not going to make lots of food, I’m making them meet me for Mexican instead! I’m sure we’ll have lots of fun, but first I need to clean this mess of a house!
  • Madden has had 3 teeth come in within the last week and one more is about to break through. This will put him up to 12 teeth.
  • Madden has started hitting. Any suggestions for how to solve this issue? I’m not pleased with this new development.
  • On a happier note, Madden has slept through the night (7pm-5:30/6:00am) the past week! I’m knocking on wood, crossing my fingers, and saying a few Our Fathers in hopes of this continuing.
  • I received Madden’s 9-12 month and First Birthday photo books from Shutterfly! Love them! I’ve made him 6 photo books so far! They have been the perfect way for me to do pictures. I’m not good at getting them printed and now they are all organized by date and put in books without much effort on my part!
  • I also received some fabric this week that I ordered. A Christmas quilt is in my future! I can’t wait to share.
  • Just thinking about the Olympics has got me excited! I always dreamed of becoming an Olympic Gymnast. Sorry for my sake, doing 13 back-handsprings in a row isn’t going to get me to London. Anyway, I haven’t tried doing one since getting pregnant with Madden. Oh well, I can watch and dream… (and enjoy watching Michael Phelps).

Random post with a lot of not-so-exciting stuff, but I promise some good posts in the very near future! The husband is working during the day and then going to his part time security job in the evening tomorrow, so I’m sure there will be lots of posting time after the house is scrubbed!

Happy Opening Ceremonies Day! :-)

Fifteen Months

This past Friday Madden turned fifteen months. He’s really growing and is learning new things every day.

Madden is still the same size as last month. We don’t have his next doctor’s appointment until the middle of August and I don’t have a scale to see how much he weighs. He has lost all the baby chub, not that he had much to begin with.

Sleep is getting better. (I should say it was getting better. now he has hand, foot, and mouth and is very restless. I hope it passes quickly. The poor guy is covered in rash from the waist down.) He’s typically getting up once a night because of a soaked diaper.

Some of Madden’s favorite things:

  • Sharing milkshakes with Daddy.
  • Drinking from a straw.
  • Getting Pepe in trouble by giving him the sippy cup and snacks.
  • Playing with the kitties.
  • Wearing shoes and a hat. He has started asking first thing in the morning for shoes. As soon as he has shoes, he thinks he needs his hat.
  • Fruit, bread, and cheese for snack time.
  • Playing “Boom, Baby” with Daddy (aka – watching Daddy shoot the basketball and yelling, “Boom, Baby!” when he gets a basket).

I’m so glad I’ve been able to spend the summer hanging out with this little guy! He can always put a smile on my face! :-)

Things are a bit crazy right now. Blogging may be put on hold while I complete some projects and prepare for a bridal shower and a trip to my parents!

Update: Kitties Found!

After spending an entire afternoon and evening worrying about where the kittens were, we found them! The husband worked security on Friday night and when he got home he thought he saw something run across the road. (We later decided this was a cat that belongs to someone else. ) We watched outside the window for twenty minutes or so to see if we saw the cat come back across the road into our yard without any luck.

Around 11:30pm husband went in search of the kitties again. As he was walking around the house he shined his flashlight toward the window to the crawlspace and saw some eyes. He found the kitties. They were both under the house and have spent most of their time there since. We played with the kitties in the middle of the night and then were able to find them there the next morning.

You may notice that you keep seeing the same kitten in all the pictures. This one is a playful little guy. The other one is very timid and it takes a lot for him to come out from under the house. He still has not let us pet him. Madden thinks the kittens are pretty wonderful, but he really loves the food and water bowls. He almost immediately picked up the water bowl and spilled all of the water (on himself) before I could get it. Oh, well!

We’re very excited to have our kittens back! Maybe we should name them…

Missing: 2 Kitties

After the appearance of a small gray critter in our garage, we decided we needed a cat around the house. Well, one cat turned into two and we found ourselves looking for some free kittens. We started our search at the animal shelter. The cats were all quarantined due to some “black bug” that the vet couldn’t even identify. Lovely. After the husband chatted with some friends, he found someone with five kittens.

Friday was to be the big day. We signed all the papers and FINALLY closed on our house (squatters, no more), I mailed off a curtain order, and we had a good lunch at Staggs (a local place that has great food and the Best. Ice Cream. EVER.). Then, it was time for us to go get kitties.

We walked into the man’s barn and he had five kittens all ready for a good home. These are the two we picked (both males). He had the cutest little runt, but it was a female. We loaded them up in the car and listened to them meow on the way home.

The little man loved meeting the kittens. He thought they were great. He actually pet them and didn’t act wild around them. We set out food and water in a shady spot and checked on them several times over the next two hours. We decided to take a nap (as in, a whole house nap), and then the story gets sad.

The kittens were GONE. We can’t find them anywhere. When we last checked, they were laying on the back steps enjoying a shady spot. I went to pet on them and give them some attention and they enjoyed it and stayed on the steps. An hour later they were not there anymore. We’ve checked everywhere, including the neighbors that are right next to us.

Husband promises me that they couldn’t be lost in the cornfield. There are some neighbors down the road that have cats, so we’re going to check with them. As of right now, I’m feeling like a bad kitty-parent. Wish us luck in our kitty hunt.

Friday Favorites: Summer

This week’s Friday Favorites: things to do in the summer! Here are a few of my favorite summer activities that we’ve/I’ve been enjoying so far this summer!

Holiday World

We loved Holiday World the first two times we went this season and we’re going to get some more use out of our season passes at the end of the month! Can’t wait for more time with Madden and to just spend some time with Mom and enjoy the lazy river!

Family Time

Spending time with family in Southern Indiana is always fun in the summer. I’ve made several trips to see my mom and dad and they’ve made trips here, too! I love that I have the summers off to enjoy family time!

Swimming

I love the water and Madden does, too! We went swimming at a hotel that Mom and Dad stayed at and he’s gone swimming in his little pool in the back yard. Summer at its best!!

Crafting Projects

The school year sometimes get hectic, so working on crafty things in the summer is always nice! This is a sneak peek of a current project I’m working on!

These are just a few of my favorite summer things! What do you like doing during the summer?

Mr & Mrs

This weekend I will be attending 1 of 2 bridal showers for my sister-in-law, Heather. This weekend’s shower is being hosted by her friends and next weekend’s is hosted by her mom, sister-in-law, and myself. Today I took the little man on an adventure to Target, Kohls, and Pier 1 to shop for gifts for each shower. The gift above is for the shower that we are hosting next weekend. This week’s gift is hopefully getting a little diy-love before I share!

It had told Heather that I would be taking care of her champagne glasses for the wedding. I was just going to put their names on the glasses, then decided Mr. & Mrs., then I decided to go one step further. I present to you, Mr. & Mrs. bird champagne glasses:

I used my Silhouette to cut out the vinyl. (I won a Silhouette on the Fireflies and Jellybeans blog over a year ago! I love it!) Make sure you get the vinyl smoothed out well so that you don’t have any mistakes with the next step.

I used Armour Etch and followed the directions on the bottle. I purchased this bottle from Amazon. It’s a little pricey, but a little goes a long way. I’ve used this bottle for several projects, including etching names onto Pyrex dishes!

Glob (yes, technical glass etching term) the etching cream on thick and wait patiently for five minutes while snapping pictures of your beautiful project in the making.

Wipe the cream off using a damp cloth. I try to avoid letting the etching cream even touch any other part of the glasses. If you get any on there, be sure to wipe it off quickly. Then rinse the glasses off, making sure you’ve removed all of the etching cream.

Peel off the vinyl to reveal the beautiful finished product! I absolutely love how they turned out! I know that Heather will love them, too!

I purchased the glasses from Pier 1 and all of the towels/dishcloths and basket were items that she registered for at Target.

In other news, this gigantic package came today. It contains many yards of fabric to make a custom curtain order for my Etsy shop. I better get busy!

And I couldn’t resist ordering some fabric for myself. I ordered a half yard of each of these. I’m planning on making the Buttercup Purse sometime before the end of the summer!

New Kicks

I have been waiting (not so patiently) for my new shoes to arrive. The 4th of July holiday kind of threw off the shipping. I went and picked these out at Finish Line a little over a week ago. They only had them in black, so I had them order the shoes at the store and they shipped them to my house for free. They are Asics Gel-Nimbus 13. They had good reviews and were very comfortable when I walked around in them at the store.

Bonus- New Shoes in the Mail = New Box to Play In!

I’ve been wearing them all day around the house. I should get to give them a try this evening! I’m definitely looking forward to a run with some cushioning. The shoes I’m currently running in have a spot rubbed in the toe (did my foot grow?) and they are lacking in any cushion.

What kind of shoes do you prefer?

One last pic of me and the little man! :-)
